Women in Language & Why I Rap

Following the incredible Women in Language conference, I have been so motivated and inspired by the determined, creative linguistas and polyglots I had the pleasure of meeting.

Today's video was fully inspired by Kerstin from Fluent Language. I love the idea of doing creative work in another language and anytime I try to write a poem in another language, I can't help but make it a rap song.

#LanguagePoems

Kerstin is encouraging everyone to use #LanguagePoems to share their own writing in the target language of their choice.

If you know me, you know I love to rap in other languages. Just for fun.

Here is my contribution.

My original rap song, "Ich bin die Nikki."

Ich bin die Nikki und ich liebe Sprachen.
wenn ich sie benutze ich muss immer lachen.
Ich lerne gern und unterrichte auch
mit ganzem Herzen und Seele bis auf meinem Bauch.

I encourage you to free write in the language you are learning!
Leave a comment below with your own #LanguagePoem :)

International Women's Day

Every year on March 8th, we celebrate International Women's Day around the world. This year, I am thrilled to be celebrating women everywhere with the Polish & Slavic FCU.

As you most likely already know, I am Polish-American and proud of it! I've always been connected to my Polish roots and love to support my fellow Polish-Americans in their entrepreneurial endeavors.

Shop Small

For the last year, I have made a conscious effort to shop small businesses as much as possible and especially female owned and operated businesses.

I love being able to directly make a difference in someone's life.

Międzynarodowy Dzień Kobiet

Wish the women in your life a Happy International Women's Day today and make sure to appreciate, support, and lift up the women in your life.

In Polish, you can say: Wszystkiego najlepszego z okazji międzynarodowy dzień kobiet!

How do you celebrate March 8th?

In Croatia, I remember getting flowers and chocolates from co-workers, students, and neighbors and being celebrated every year. It was so lovely!

Here's to women all around the world - I stand with you today and every day.

3. AI is inventing languages we don't understand.

Researchers at Facebook realized their bots were chattering in a new language. Then they stopped it. Do you think they should have stopped it?

5. Lost languages were discovered at one of the oldest libraries in the world.

Saint Catherine’s Monastery, located in the shadow of Mount Sinai in Egypt, is a sacred Christian site home to one of the world’s oldest continuously used libraries.

Thousands of manuscripts and books are kept there — some of which contain hidden treasures.

I got to visit in 2009 and was stunned by the incredible library and their dedication to the upkeep of these truly ancient manuscripts.

Recently found were several intriguing manuscripts written in obscure languages that fell out of use many centuries ago.

Two of the erased texts, for instance, were inked in Caucasian Albanian, a language spoken by Christians in what is now Azerbaijan.
