Linguacious™ Game-Based Language Flashcards Having fun is such an important part of language learning. If you're not having fun, it's understanding that you wouldn't want to continue. That's one of the reasons why I love incorporating as many games when I'm learning or teaching a language. Whether you're learning for the first time yourself as an adult or your children are working on a new language skill, it's so helpful to approach language learning just like kids too. I recently got to try out these game-based vocabulary flashcards for Polish and I was so excited to see my 2 and 4 year old niece and nephew play with the cards. They are both native English speakers living in the U.S. and learning Polish. It's not always easy to get little ones excited about speaking another language so finding a new way to incorporate a new toy with language learning is brilliant. I'm a huge believer in being able to see, hear, and repeat new words and phrases and you can do just that with the Linguacious™ flashcards. You see a picture of an item on one side the card and there is a code on each card that you can scan with the Linguacious™ app to hear a native speaker pronouncing the word. The word is also written on the other side of the card. How to Get Kids to Speak Another Language at Home Parents who are native speakers of the languages Linguacious™ offer explained that their children did not want to speak in the language at home until they started playing with the cards. As it turns out, many kids prefer listening to a stranger pronounce the word by scanning the app than having mom or dad "teach" them the words. Co-founder Victor D. O. Santos, PhD described the thought process behind innovating this new technique: The sole purpose of these flashcards is to serve as an entry point into a language, especially for kids. We want kids to feel a sense of achievement quickly and have fun, which is why we chose not to include grammar, sentences, etc, on our cards. The purpose is to peak their interest in that language and languages in general through our cards games and scanning the cards; that's it. In a few days, they are able to show off their knowledge of words in the language and get that sense of pride that will motivate them to move forward in the language. My Honest Review of Linguacious™ There are so many aspects of language learning and I strongly believe you need to use a variety of methods including speaking, listening, reading, and writing to truly learn the language. The Linguacious™ Flashcards are great for language learners of all ages. There are so many different fun games you can play with the flashcards. I had so much fun using these cards on my own as well as with my niece and nephew. They were super excited to see the cards and were immediately intrigued on how to play. They took out the cards and spread them out and picked them up one by one. We said each word in Polish and in English. They both loved the red t-shirt card (because I was wearing a red t-shirt that day so it looked like "Ciocia's shirt" (Ciocia = Aunt in Polish) and the toy card (zabawki = toys in Polish). There are so many ways to play with and use the cards, it's a great tool in my arsenal for teaching Polish to others. I plan on using these cards with my high school and adult students as well.
