The Lord's Prayer in German | Das Vaterunser auf Deutsch

Picture

Vater unser im Himmel,

geheiligt werde dein Name.
Dein Reich komme.
Dein Wille geschehe,

Amen.

Vater Unser auf Englisch | The Lord's Prayer in English

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

For Yours is the kingdom
and the power
and the glory forever.

Amen.

Hello my name is Catheryn. I come from German roots but was never taught to speak it. I remember my Oma saying the come Lord Jesus prayer. She had a plaque of it also. I am trying to find the Lords pryer and that prayer in plaque form for my mother. Would you have any suggestions? I love how you put German and English side by side. Thank You for your help

Hi Catheryn!

Thanks so much for your message. That sounds like such a perfect gift idea for your Mom. I couldn't find a prayer plaque with the Lord's Prayer but I did find this German home blessing plaque that she might also like on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2tQbUTV

I'm going to email you a copy of the German and English PDF so you can print it out if you want and will be on the lookout for a prayer plaque.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

Hi Catherine,
I suggest that you look at the website biblegateway.com. There are several different German translations for you to read - hopefully you'll find one that you like.
Kind regards and best wishes

If you're going to use the old version of the Lord's Prayer, it ends with 'For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen'. That version hasn't been used in English Protestant services since the 1980s, unless we are choosing to use the traditional words at Evensong. The contemporary version is:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

We use the traditional version all the time as do most other churches in the Uk that I visit. Very few use the modern version.

Well Tricia, our church must be among the few, because we use the modern version every Sunday. I actually grew up using the Prayer Book version, which is older than what most people now consider to be the 'traditional' version.
All the debate about which is the original version is really quite amusing. After all, Jesus spoke Aramaic, so presumably he taught the disciples how to pray in the same language! I've yet to see anyone who insists on using the Aramaic version!

My church in New York City uses the old, traditional version - just recited it a few minutes ago in our online service. The churches I attend in Illinois do also.

Some Lutherans (like LCMS) use for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever Amen.

To C Preston
Strictly speaking, the old form of the Lords Prayer and the original, ends as it does here. The rejoinder, “for thine is the kingdom... etc” is a doxology appended to the end of the prayer as quoted from Jesus some 1000 years after Matthew’s account in chapter 6. Currently Catholics use an even longer doxology during Mass while most Catholics, while praying in private, end it as it is ended in Matthews gospel as noted and as ended here.
While Italian American I was taught the Lord’s Prayer in Latin, English, Italian and German. As I was taught it in Tedesco (German) we said it slightly differently in the beginning as follows: Vater Unser der du bist in Himmel. Yours is a more modern way I suppose or, possibly, my memory from childhood (I am in my 70s) is faulty.

Hi Michael,
There is nothing wrong with your memory. I think the version you remember from childhood is an older one. Personally I like both, just as I like the two different English versions. Both perfectly valid - after all, it's the meaning of the words and whether we pray them from our hearts.

Hi, my family has always said the prayer before the meal as, “Come Lord Jesus and be our guest, let this food to us be blessed.” I want to have a plaque made and I want to put that in German but I can’t remember how to say it. Can you help? Thanks!

Frieda,
We used to say this prayer too as children. Here it is ,

Komm Herr Jesus sei unser Gast
und segne alles was Du uns bescheret hast .
Amen

The translation you give of the Our Father into German is
quite different from the one I learned in High German as
a child. Do you have other translations?

Hi Miriam,
I don't know any other translations, but I'd be fascinated to read the High German version from your childhood. I have a very vague memory of a different version from years ago - just enough to know that it was not the same as the modern one.

Hi

I really love that you have this translation. I was looking for a version so I can pass to my German friend who has asked me before. Could you please do a Glory be prayer too ?:)

Sincerely,
Angela
